The topic that I would like to discuss would be society's acceptance of homosexuality. Currently reading The Picture of Dorian Gray, written by Oscar Wilde I have picked up on some gay undertones between the relationship of the primary male characters in this novel. The characters aren't direct about their feelings however they display obsessions over eachother's magnificence and beauty. Having noticed the homosexual hints in the story, this lead me to think more of the author. After writing "The Importance of Being Earnest" Wilde had engaged in numerous suits against his lovers father. Trials and trials had passed eventually accusing Wilde of gross indecenency with other men, imprisoning him for two years and required to perform intensive labor. Oscar created a number of works in prison which discused his new passions and pleasures, along with occurences in jail.
The acceptance of homosexuality has highly evolved over the decades. In Wilde's time, it was highly looked down upon thus his brutal punishment of jail, and was rarely accepted or talked of. Now America and society is sticking up for homosexuality and is making gay films and documentaries such as MILK which concerned the first gay male and the hardships he endured because of the the overwhelming discrimination, which in turn received an academy award for the heart-wrenching story. More celebrities are opening up about homosexuality such as Queen Latifah, Ricky Martin, and Adam Lambert showing that people aren't afraid anymore of society's response and also that America and society as a whole has been taking the reality of homosexuality in better ways. In some states homosexual couples are now allowed to become legally married, and as time goes on more states are heeding to this rule. The Don't Ask Don't Tell law has just been repealed, which provides gay males in the military freedom for expression, allowing them to not have to hide behind a false facade anymore.
I think that America has become much more open and accepting of the homosexuals in our society and that the acceptance rate has only increased and gotten better. Despite the progress that we've made with this issue as a country, it is still obvious that homosexuality is not entirely accepted. We can see this through the lives of the people who still are afraid to be who the are. A young male student from Drexel University had recently committed suicide out of fear and shame because gay sexual encounters had been leaked over the internet of him and his partner. Clearly, the acceptance of homosexuality needs to improve if people are still living in fear of how they were born. I stand against all sorts of discrimination, this being one of them. People don't decide what color their skin will be, or what kind of person they'll fall in love with and I don't understand why every one in today's world must gang up on someone just because they're different. What sex a person prefers is noones business but his/her own and therefore the level of exclusion and ostracizing in today's society should not be present.
Good connection Sam. Great blog!
